The knee can be in three different positions when you are standing: locked, balanced, and bent(38). When playing the flute, your knees should rarely be in the locked position; instead they should be in the balanced position, occasionally drifting into the bent position. Experiment with each of the three positions while playing, to find a comfortable effortless place between the balanced and bent; this is how the knees should be while playing(39). If you play with locked knees while standing, there is a good chance that you will throw off your balance. Practicing with good knee position will help you improve balance when sitting(40).
