"You never need to overcome numbers with playing"
Dr. Kyle Malone judged our performance at the Skyline Jazz Festival. At the festival he gave us a few tips on soloing:
- Short phases are nice for beginning jazz players, but as you develop your skills, solo's phrases should be between 10-12 notes long.
- When a child learns to talk, he/she starts with small phrases, but as he/she gets older, he/she develops longer phrases.
Dr. Kyle Malone was the Interim Director of Jazz Studies at UNC.
